📅 5-Day Pasola Itinerary
Arrival — Fly Into Sumba
Arrive at Tambolaka Airport (West Sumba). Our guide meets you at the terminal. Check in to premium accommodation — Cap Karoso, Lelewatu, or equivalent. Evening briefing: understand the Pasola’s spiritual significance, what to expect, and how to behave respectfully at sacred ceremony sites. Dinner at accommodation or local restaurant.
Nyale Festival & First Pasola Location
Early morning: join villagers at the beach for the sacred Nyale sea worm ritual — the underwater signal that Pasola season has begun. After the Nyale ceremony, travel to the first Pasola festival grounds. Hours of cavalry battle, warrior dress, and community celebration. Our cultural expert translates the deep spiritual meaning in real time. Return to accommodation.
Second Pasola Location & Cultural Villages
Attend Pasola at a second location (Kodi, Wanukaka, or Gaura depending on lunar calendar). Visit a traditional megalithic village — massive stone tombs, ancestral clan houses, and living tradition. Optional: watch Sumba Ikat weaving demonstration and meet with Rato priest (sacred priest) for ceremonial context.
Sumba Natural Highlights
West Sumba exploration: Weekuri Lake (natural saltwater lagoon), Pero Beach, Bukit Wairinding (hilltop panorama). Afternoon: Lapopu Waterfall or local handicraft market depending on pace preference. Cultural lunch with local family.

💡 Why This Package is Different
Most Pasola tours visit one location and offer a superficial experience. Our 5D/4N package gives you access to multiple ceremony locations, each with its own character and community — dramatically increasing your chance of witnessing the festival at its most spectacular. Our guides’ personal relationships with ceremony leaders provide access and positioning that simply cannot be booked independently.
Additionally, we take care of every logistical challenge: Sumba roads can be rough, ceremony locations change with lunar timing, and protocol missteps can result in guests being asked to leave. With Sumba Pasola, you arrive prepared, positioned correctly, and welcomed.

The five-day Pasola package exists because the festival is not a single event — it is a cultural process that unfolds across days and locations. Pasola takes place at four distinct valleys in West Sumba, each with its own warrior clans, ceremony traditions, and community dynamics. A five-day itinerary allows you to attend Pasola at two or three of these locations, witnessing how the same sacred tradition takes on different character in each community. At Lamboya, the ceremony has a solemn, traditional quality. At Kodi, the energy is fierce and the crowds are largest. At Wanukaka, the intimacy of a smaller ceremony creates a deeply personal experience.
Between ceremony days, the 5D/4N package uses the intervening time to explore Sumba’s extraordinary natural landscape. Weekuri Lake, a hidden saltwater lagoon with turquoise water and dramatic cliff surrounds, is a perfect contrast to the intensity of the Pasola ceremony. Lapopu Waterfall provides another kind of natural spectacle — a powerful cascade in a jungle gorge that is at its most dramatic during the wet season months when Pasola takes place. These natural excursions provide both physical and emotional contrast to the ceremony’s intensity.
The cultural immersion on the 5D/4N package extends well beyond the ceremony itself. You will visit traditional megalithic villages where massive stone tombs — some weighing over seventy tonnes — are still carved and erected for clan chiefs. You will watch Ikat textile master weavers at work, creating ceremonial cloths using a tie-dye technique that predates recorded history. You may be invited to witness smaller village rituals that precede the main Pasola ceremony. And throughout, your guide provides continuous cultural interpretation that gives meaning to every detail you observe.
For travellers who have been planning their Pasola attendance for months or years, the 5D/4N package is the recommended choice. It provides enough time to absorb the full cultural context, attend multiple ceremonies, and explore the island that gives birth to this extraordinary tradition — all without the fatigue that comes from cramming too much into too few days.
